Objective
To support the most innovative and meritorious research projects from independent Swiss investigators.

Science Focus
Research broadly related to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke or to related basic science.

Disciplines
All basic disciplines as well as epidemiological and clinical investigations that bear on hypertension, cardiovascular and stroke problems.

Target Market
Applicants must have:

1. An MD, PhD or equivalent doctoral degree.
2. The applicant must meet institutional requirements for submission of an extramural, peer reviewed grant proposal.
3. No other support for the submitted project.

In addition, the Principal Investigator must have sole responsibility for:

1. Preparing and submitting the proposal.
2. Conducting the research.
3. Analyzing, reporting and publishing the results.
4. Allocating and administering the research budget.

Peer Review Criteria
The scientific merit -- with emphasis on the innovative nature of the proposal -- is the most important factor in evaluating Grant-in-Aid applications.
Other criteria include the qualifications, productivity and relevant experience of the applicant, evidence of scientific independence and the adequacy of available resources.
Criteria for evaluating scientific merit are:

1. The presence of new or original ideas.
2. Clear statement of hypothesis-driven research.
3. Sufficient experimental detail in the research plan.
4. Understanding of the essential methodology.
5. Adequacy of the experimental design.
6. Importance of the question and projected scientific impact.
7. Adequacy of the research facilities and institutional environment.
8. Logical organization of the proposal.

Restrictions

1. Support is limited to faculty/staff of non-profit institutions in Switzerland.
2. Investigators may submit one affiliate application per year.
3. Investigators may simultaneously submit an application to the Swiss National Research Foundation (SNF).
4. Grants will not be awarded to supplement or duplicate any work that is being supported by other funding agencies (except SNF).
5. After a grant application is reviewed, the overlapping or alternative designation of the project or the budget cannot be changed in order to accommodate any partial alternative funding.
6. A laboratory may not submit fellowship and grant applications with overlapping aims to the affiliate in the same review cycle.
7. The purpose of these grants is not primarily to obtain new equipment. Any equipment request will be carefully scrutinized.

Deadline
Applications must be received at the SSH office no later than June 30 of each year.
Awards will be announced in July of the same year.

Annual Award Amount
10'000 CHF maximum per year, per project.

Award Duration
One year.

Scientific publications by the recipient during the period of the scholarship should contain the following statement:
